Four keys to maintaining momentum with your book

Maintaining your momentum with your book is critical but when you are busy and distracted, this can be difficult to do.

As I discuss in my free eBook 10 Simple Steps to Writing and Irresistible eBook that will Launch Your Business and Grow Your List Fast, publishing a book requires you to wear many different hats: business owner, writer, editor, publisher, sales manager… (to name but a few). This is why maintaining momentum with your book can be such a challenge. While one hat may fit you perfectly, others may not feel right at all.

When you feel you are wearing one of those badly fitting hats, it is probably because you are doing work that doesn’t come naturally to you, and this can easily shove you off course with your project and cause you to lose momentum.

So, how can you deal with this and ensure that you maintain your momentum until your book is finished? Here are four keys to maintaining momentum with your book – or getting it back if you have already lost it!

1. Get help

The simple solution is to ensure that you get help from others when you know you are struggling. There is nothing to be gained from getting into a situation where you get stuck and stay stuck. If there is someone out there who can help you – whether that’s a coach, an editor, a designer or someone with technical know-how – make sure you reach out and take it.

I know that getting the right help is a risk for many authors and business owners, especially if you just don’t know whether you are turn on the tapgetting the right help from the right person. Paying for that help can also be tricky if your business is in the start-up phase and you’re not sure if or how you will be able to make money from your book. This makes investing in your book financially a difficult decision to make.

The solution is to pick the parts of the process that you truly cannot do on your own and which are holding you back. It could be that the investment in getting this one task done will release you and your book. You may not get stuck again, so this investment will be very worthwhile.

2. Announce a publication date

This is a scary but very effective tactic because once you’ve announced a publication date – and even pre-sold some of your books – you won’t have any choice but to finish it. If you think you could simply apologise for a short delay, make sure you are honest with yourself and that you recognise that this is a worst-case scenario (and that you can probably only get away with it once!).

3. Remind yourself of your big Why

It’s easy to lose momentum when you forget why you are doing something. If you’ve got part-way through a project and got stuck, either revisit your initial reasons for doing the project or if you don’t already have the, begin to figure out what they are.

The big Why is often referred to as a vision statement. The two go hand-in-hand because once you have a purpose and plan mapped out, you need to write it down so you can fix it in your mind and ensure you don’t lose sight of it during the writing and publication process.

4. Plan, plan, plan – then get going

One of the main reasons that projects don’t get finished is because there was no written plan at the outset. As a result, there are too many loose ends and unmade decisions and this eventually saps energy and derails the whole project.

If you are stuck and have lost your momentum with your book, you would do worse than identify what the loose ends are, tie them up and write down all the next steps you need to take to finish your book.

After that, you have to commit to being in action. A plan isn’t worth diddly squat unless you take action to make it happen.

 

Momentum builds momentum. Once one small blockage is removed, another can be tackled and so on until whatever stood in the way of you finishing the project has gone. As soon as those blocks have gone, you can return to the state of flow that makes progressing and finishing any project feel easy, and far more enjoyable.
